What to know about this size

“2x2” means inches, not centimetres: 2 × 2 inches is 51 × 51 mm (5.1 cm a side). A 5 × 5 cm photo is slightly too small.

For the US visa the photo is also uploaded digitally with the form; the State Department asks for a square file of at least 600 × 600 px. Check its file requirements at the official source in the table.

Because it's square, few copies fit on a 10 × 15 cm sheet; if you need several, print on 13 × 18 cm or A4.

Cropping to size isn't enough: each document also sets the head size inside the photo, the exact background colour and sharpness. That's why two photos of the same size can work for one application and not for another.
