What the Spanish DNI photo must look like

Requirements from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, checked on 16 Oct 2026.

  • Size 32 × 26 mm (height × width).
  • Recent and in colour.
  • Even, plain white background.
  • Taken from the front, head uncovered and eyes open.
  • No dark-lensed glasses. Ordinary glasses are accepted if your eyes are clearly visible.
  • If you cover your head for religious or medical reasons, the whole oval of your face must be visible, from hairline to chin.

When renewing

Your forehead can’t be covered and, if you have a fringe, your eyebrows, eyes, nose, mouth and chin must be visible. Some issuing offices can take the photo on the spot, but not all of them: if you’re not sure, bring your printed photo.

The Spanish passport photo is the same size, so the same photo works for both. For several copies, use the 10 × 15 passport photo print template.

    Set up the background and light

    A white or very light wall with no shadows. Daylight from the front; avoid the flash and ceiling lights.

  2. Step 2

    Take the photo at eye level

    Ideally someone else takes it, from a metre away, framing from the shoulders up. Neutral expression, mouth closed.

  3. Step 3

    Crop and print it at real size
