What photo the TIE needs
What the Spanish Ministry of the Interior asks for, checked on 17 Oct 2026.
- One recent photograph.
- In colour.
- White background.
- ID size (“tamaño carné”): in Spain that’s the DNI photo size, 32 × 26 mm (height × width).
When you need it
The Ministry asks for it when the card is first issued, when you renew it, for a duplicate after loss or theft, and when your details or situation change.
Some cases ask for more than one copy. Check your appointment's list of documents and print what it asks for: one 10 × 15 cm sheet holds several.

Why get it checked
A rejected photo means another appointment.
Appointments for the TIE are hard to get. If the photo isn't accepted, you may have to come back with another one.
The checked photo reviews framing, head size, background, lighting and sharpness with the same rules as the DNI photo and, when needed, makes the background white. You see the watermarked result before you pay; then you download it without the watermark, with the print sheet, from €7.99.
If the office rejects it for not meeting the requirements, we refund you: refund policy.

Frequently asked questions
Is the TIE photo the same as the DNI photo?
Yes, in size: the Ministry asks for “tamaño carné”, which in Spain is the DNI’s 32 × 26 mm, recent, in colour and with a white background. You can use the same photo file for both.
Is the 35 × 45 mm photo from my passport valid?
No. 35 × 45 mm is the size of many passports and visas (see which), not the Spanish ID size. For the TIE, use 26 × 32 mm.
How many photos do I need?
The Ministry’s page asks for one photograph per procedure, but some cases ask for more. Check your appointment’s documents; a 10 × 15 cm sheet holds 12 copies at real size.
Can I make it for free?
Yes: cropping to TIE size is free and doesn’t change the background or check the photo. The checked photo costs from €7.99 and you only pay if you like the result.
