What photo a child's DNI needs
The same rules as for adults, from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior, checked on 16 Oct 2026.
- Recent and in colour.
- Size 32 × 26 mm (height × width).
- Even, plain white background.
- Taken from the front, with the head fully uncovered.
- Eyes open, even for a baby.
The appointment
The child goes to the appointment in person, with a parent or whoever holds parental authority or guardianship. The Ministry sets no minimum age.
For a first DNI you also bring a full birth certificate issued for the DNI (no older than six months) and a padrón certificate (no older than three months).
Some DNI offices can take the photo automatically. If yours can't, or you'd rather not try with a crying baby in the queue, bring one ready.

How to take it at home
With a baby it's easier at home than in a photo booth.
Lay the baby on their back on a white sheet with no creases, near a window with daylight, and take the photo from straight above. With an older child, stand them against a plain light wall.
Wait until they're awake and calm, with their eyes open and mouth closed. Nothing should cover the face: no dummy, toy or hands in the frame. Take several photos: one will work.
The checked photo reviews framing, head size, background, lighting and sharpness, and makes the background white if needed. You see the watermarked result before you pay; then you download it without the watermark, with the print sheet, from €7.99.
If the office rejects it for not meeting the requirements, we refund you: refund policy.

Frequently asked questions
Does a newborn need a photo for the DNI?
Yes. The Ministry asks for the same photo whatever the age: recent, in colour, 32 × 26 mm, white background, eyes open. Some offices can take it there; if yours can’t, bring it.
Can I hold my baby for the photo?
Your hands or arms shouldn’t appear. Lay the baby on a white sheet and take the photo from above instead: nobody has to hold them.
Is it the same photo for the baby's passport?
Yes, in size: the Spanish passport uses the same 32 × 26 mm as the DNI. You can use the same file for both.
Can I make it for free?
Yes: cropping to DNI size is free and doesn’t change the background or check the photo. The checked photo costs from €7.99 and you only pay if you like the result.
